Omen Deng is, in my mind, the worst kind of RPG boss. In a game about choices, the cutscene prior to the engagement itself forces you into an unsavory position because Thorton is holding the idiot ball. Then, Deng goes invisible (for some reason) and gains what appears to be temporary invulnerability (notice that those five rounds of chain shot we pumped into his bleached-blonde, Final Fantasy knockoff head did jack squat). It’s only when we get to this big room with a bunch of pillars (what purpose does this room serve, anyway?) that we are allowed to actually begin the boss fight. Everything about this felt forced on the player for arbitrary reasons simply because they couldn’t come up with a clean way to handle the fight.
